Frank Grannis passed away July 2nd, 2014 from complications of several illnesses. Frank was born August 01, 1945 in Los Angeles, He grew up in Hermosa Beach. Being the son of LeRoy Grannis, he had no choice but to be a surfer. Starting at an early age in the early 60s, he soon excelled and became one of the best surfers in the South Bay. He was also a champion paddle board racer. In 1963 Frank, Mike Doyle, Jim Graham and another won the relay paddle race at the Makaha international surf championships. It was an unheard of feat as the four Californians beat the best Hawaiians at their break. Frank also placed 3rd that year in the junior division at the age of 17.

He was my brother and hero. He is survived by John, Alana, and Kaylee Grannis. Nancy Grannis, David, liz and Alan Wiig and Kit and Paul Padilla. We are having a paddle out/ memorial at 6th St. in Hermosa beach this Saturday Sept. 27th at 10:00 am. We will be paddling out around 11:00 am. Everyone is welcome. We are going to be celebrating all our loved ones lives.
